REGULAR MEETING
June 11, 2007
7:30 P.M.

Members Present: Susan Borcher, Mike Gerdes, Teresa Goracke, Barb Gottula, Greg Hunzeker, Steve Nolte

The Johnson County School District No. 0050 Board of Education met in regular session at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 11, 2007, in the media center of the high school building in Tecumseh. A current copy of the agenda was available for inspection in the office of the Superintendent prior to the meeting.

Steve Nolte called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. and stated that a copy of the Open Meetings Law was available for review.

A motion was made by Borcher and seconded by Gerdes to approve the minutes of the June 4, 2007, special meeting as presented. Roll call vote: Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes. Carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Gerdes and seconded by Goracke to approve Nemaha Valley General Fund claims in the amount of $187,271.83. Roll call vote: Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes. Carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Gottula and seconded by Borcher to approve Tecumseh General Fund claims in the amount of $330914.08. Roll call vote: Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes. Carried 6-0.

COMMUNICATION WITH THE BOARD

A letter from Harold and Diane Kettelhake requesting the start of a softball program for the 2007-08 school year was discussed. It was felt that it would be too late to start a program for the coming school year, but the issue should be studied during the school year.

BOARD COMMITTEE REPORT

PRINCIPALS' REPORTS

Principal Lester reported on the following:

A. The high school class schedules are very close to being completed. Registration of students for high school classes will take place this week.
Principal Gottschalk reported on the following:

A. The middle school schedule is close to being completed.

B. Elementary staffing at the two sites is close to being finalized, with a few decisions still to be made.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Superintendent Moles reported on the following:

A. A plan to allow some elementary aged students from Tecumseh to attend school in Cook to make class sizes more even was discussed. A letter will be sent to parents outlining this plan.

B. Athletic Director Rich Bacon and the head varsity coaches will meet with representatives of sporting goods companies on Tuesday, June 12 to consider uniform purchases. The plan for purchasing uniforms was discussed.

C. The plan for utilizing bookkeepers and secretaries was outlined.

D. Supt. Moles reported that he had met with Daniel Kettelhake and Cinda Goodrich to discuss a possible project to compose a school fight song for the new school. Mr. Kettelhake and Nathan Morrisey have offered to pursue this project.

E. The reduction in force policies of both Tecumseh and Nemaha Valley were reviewed.

F. The negotiated agreements of both Tecumseh and Nemaha Valley were reviewed.

G. Congratulations cards were signed for Scotty Wenzl, Michael Flewelling, and Kate Wellensiek (medalists at the State Track Meet), Derek Kuhl (selected to the Bison Gold Basketball Team), and Johnny Jiang (elected Governor of Cornhusker Boys State).

FUTURE DATES

The NASB School Finance Workshop will be held in Lincoln on July 19.

Supt. Moles reviewed the outcome of the election for school name, mascot, and colors. The results were as follows:

A motion was made by Borcher and seconded by Nolte to approve the new school name as Johnson County Central Public Schools, the school mascot as the Thunderbirds, and the school colors as red, gold, and black. Roll call vote: Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes. Carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Gerdes and seconded by Hunzeker to identify Jack Moles as the authorized representative of the district. Roll call vote: Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes. Carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Goracke to name the Tecumseh Chieftain as the official newspaper of the district. Roll call vote: Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes. Carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Borcher and seconded by Hunzeker to recognize representatives of the former TEA and NVTA as the negotiating agents for the teachers. Roll call vote: Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes. Carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Gottula and seconded by Hunzeker to approve the school calendar for the 2007-08 school year. Roll call vote: Gerdes-yes Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes. Carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Borcher and seconded by Hunzeker to adopt the Tecumseh Public Schools board policy book as the policy book for Johnson County Central Public Schools. Roll call vote: Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes. Carried 6-0

A motion was made by Goracke and seconded by Borcher to use Harding and Shultz as the district’s school attorneys. Roll call vote: Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes. Carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Goracke to approve purchasing a SOCS website for $2,280. Roll call vote: Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes. Carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Borcher to approve paying $100 stipend per teacher for up to two days of merger work with Superintendent approval, with additional days left to the Superintendent’s discretion. Roll call vote: Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes. Carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Hunzeker and seconded by Goracke to adopt a resolution from American National Bank signifying required signatures for Tecumseh accounts through August, 2007. Roll call vote: Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes. Carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Goracke to use REAP grant funds to update the telephone system at the Tecumseh site and to tie the phone systems at the two sites together, with the work to be completed by Capitol City Telephone. Roll call vote: Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Borcher-yes. Carried 6-0.

A recess was declared at 9:52 p.m.

The meeting was reconvened at 10:07 p.m.

A motion was made by Goracke and seconded by Hunzeker to enter executive session for the purposes of discussing negotiations and personnel. Roll call vote: Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes. Carried 6-0.

Entered executive session at 10:10 p.m.

A motion was made by Gottula and seconded by Borcher to leave executive session. Roll call vote: Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes. Carried 6-0.

Left executive session at 12:20 a.m.

A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Goracke to set Supt. Moles’ salary at $96,000, provide 21 days of vacation and personal leave, and to provide $300 deductible Blue Cross/Blue Shield health insurance with 100% A, B, and C dental coverage. Roll call vote: Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes. Carried 6-0.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:30 a.m., with the next regularly scheduled meeting to be held in the cafeteria of the high school in Tecumseh at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2007.
