The Johnson County School District No. 0050 Board of Education met in regular session at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 13, 2007, in the media center of the middle school in Cook. A current copy of the agenda was available for inspection in the office of the Superintendent prior to the meeting.
Steve Nolte called the meeting to order at 7:37 p.m. and stated that a copy of the Open Meetings Law was available for review.
A motion was made by Borcher and seconded by Gerdes to approve the minutes of the July 9, 2007, regular meeting and July 26, 2007 special meeting. Roll call vote: Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Gottula to approve Tecumseh General Fund claims in the amount of $299,626.97. Roll call vote: Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Gerdes and seconded by Hunzeker to approve Nemaha Valley General Fund claims in the amount of $179,917.60. Roll call vote: Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Hunzeker to enter executive session for the purpose of discussing an option enrollment request. Roll call vote: Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes. Carried 6-0.
Entered executive session at 7:49 p.m.
A motion was made by Gottula and seconded by Gerdes to leave executive session. Roll call vote: Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes. Carried 6-0.
Left executive session at 9:02 p.m.
No action was taken on the option enrollment request from Deb Lairmore.

PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS
Principal Lester reported on the following:
A. High school pre-registration has been held.
B. Student schedules are being prepared.
C. The ACT test preparation class will be offered this fall.
D. There have been changes made in secretarial assignments. Bev Wiebke will serve as the high school secretary and Kim Seeba will serve as a secretary.
Principal Skwarek reported on the following:
A. Thirty-seven students participated in summer school.
B. Thirty-four students are registered for pre-school, with 17 students attending both sites.
C. Brooke Fender, Suzie Lacey, and June Maul have been hired as aides.
Principal Gottschalk reported on the following:
A. A pre-school open house will be held in both Cook and Tecumseh on Wednesday, August 15.
B. The Middle School walk-through will be held in Cook on Wednesday, August 15.
SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Superintendent Moles reported on the following:
A. The current student count stands at 527.
B. The number of former Nemaha Valley students who optioned to other districts this year was reviewed. Thirty-seven students optioned to other districts.
C. A budget workshop for the Board of Education will be held on Aug. 29 in Tecumseh.
D. Student transportation was discussed. The plan is still being fine tuned.
E. The gutters on the modular buildings in Tecumseh will be replaced.
F. Options concerning whether to put both sites under one soft drink vendor or to continue being split between Coca Cola and Pepsi were discussed.
FUTURE DATES
The NASB Area Membership meeting will be held in Nebraska City on September 19.

NEW BUSINESS
A motion was made by Goracke and seconded by Borcher to approve the selected Thunderbird logo as the official mascot of the district. Roll call vote: Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Gerdes to revisions of the following Board of Education policies: 1120 (Tobacco), 2100 (Superintendent of Schools), 2110 (Duties of the Superintendent of Schools), 2110A (Superintendent Job Description), 2120 (Superintendent’s Evaluation), 2120A (Superintendent Evaluation Instrument), 3130 (Purchasing), 3140 (Contracting for Services), 3150 (Paying for Goods and Services), 3200 (Money in School Buildings), 4150 (Evaluation of Certificated Employees), 6282 (School Colors), 8310 (Formulation of Policies), 9200 (Formulation, Adoption, Amendment of Policies), 9230 (Suspension of Policies, Bylaws, and Regulations), and to delete policy 8320 (Adoption, Amendment or Suspension of Policies). Roll call vote: Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Borcher and seconded by Gottula to approve the Teacher Evaluation Instrument. Roll call vote: Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Hunzeker to adopt policy 4320 (Safe Pupil Transportation Plan) on first reading. Roll call vote: Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Hunzeker and seconded by Gerdes to name American National Bank as the depository bank for the district for the General Fund and Bond Funds, and to identify the Farmers Bank of Cook as the depository bank for the Lunch Fund and Activity Fund, with certificates of deposit to be bid. Roll call vote: Gerdes-yes Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Goracke to accept the bid from ALICAP to serve as the insurance provider for the district. Roll call vote: Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Borcher and seconded by Hunzeker to approve the distance learning interlocal agreement. Roll call vote: Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Hunzeker and seconded by Gerdes to approve the bid from Gottula Propane to provide propane for the Cook site at a rate of $1.399 per gallon for 45,000 gallons. Roll call vote: Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-abstain. Motion carried 5-0-1.
A motion was made by Gottula and seconded by Goracke to approve the Certified Staff, Bus Drivers, and Coaches handbooks. Roll call vote: Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Borcher and seconded by Hunzeker to approve the negotiated agreement with the teachers, contingent upon acceptable final wording. Roll call vote: Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Borcher to approve the changes in the wording to the Superintendent’s contract. Roll call vote: Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Borcher and seconded by Goracke to set admission prices as follows: $4.00 for adults and $3.00 for students for varsity contests; $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for students for junior varsity and middle school contests; and $10.00 for a year-long pass for those 65 and older. Roll call vote: Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes. Carried 6-0.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:59 p.m., with the next regularly scheduled meeting to be held in the high school cafeteria in Tecumseh at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2007.
