The Johnson County Central Cross Country team competed in the highly competitive Fremont Bergan Invite on Friday, September 7th. The meet featured some of the best runners from the state and one of the most challenging courses the runners will see. On the girls side the Lady Thunderbirds finished in 7th place as a team. Fort Calhoun, last years Class C champion, was able to win the meet. Once again Angie Martinez was able to pick up a medal by finishing 13th out of 62 runners in a fine time of 19:35. Jamie Scott finished in 27th place with a time of 20:56. Both Angie and Jamie improved their times on this course from last year by over 1:20. Megan Murphy finished in 42nd, Becky Scheer was 57th and Katie Kuhl was 59th. In the boys race Kevin Pena was able to finish 20th in a very good time of 19:40. The other JC Central finishers were as follows: Ricky Reyes - 59th, Augie Pena - 63rd, Derek Kuhl - 65th, Brian Middleton - 67th, and Lucas Lada - 69th. As a team the boys finished in 9th place overall. Gretna was the team champion with 21 points followed by Lincoln Lutheran with 43. Coach Weber was pleased with the effort of all runners on a challenging course against some very good competition. Many of the runners are starting to see improvement and as both teams gain more experience, they should start to see more success as a team. The next meet for the team is Thursday, September 13th, at the Fillmore Central Invite in Geneva, beginning at 5:00.
