Fourth Grade Students at Cook Enjoy Reading Activities

Genre Projects

by Julie Tubbesing

November 09, 2007

The fourth grade students at the north JCC school have been studying the different types of genre in literature for the last two weeks.  Each student picked a book at his/her reading level and did the following activities with the book:

They read the book and passed an Accelerated Reading test.

They read a passage, orally, from their book to the class that was approximately 100 words long         that depicted the genre of their book.

They shared an item they made that illustrated the genre in their book.

They wrote an acrostic poem to represent the main character of the book.

If the student wished to work for an "A" they did two of the following activities:

    a.  Write a one page newspaper with stores describing events that happened in the novel.

    b.  Design a coat of arms to represent the main character of the book.

    c.  Design a creative book jacket for the book.

    d.  Design a "Wanted!" poster featuring one of the characters from the story.

    e.  Find 15 new vocabulary words introduced in the book.  Create a glossary in which you define             each word and draw illustrations to go with at least five of the definitions.

The students could also dress in clothing that depicted the genre of the book or as one of the

characters in the book to earn extra credit.

The fourth grade students had a wonderful time completing their projects and learned about genre.
