BOARD OF EDUCATION

REGULAR MEETING

December 12, 2007

7:30 P.M.

 

Members Present:      Susan Borcher, Mike Gerdes, Teresa Goracke, Barb Gottula, Steve Nolte

 

Member Absent:  Greg Hunzeker

            The Johnson County School District No. 0050 Board of Education met in regular session at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 2007, in the cafeteria in Tecumseh.  A current copy of the agenda was available for inspection in the office of the Superintendent prior to the meeting.  The meeting was moved from Monday, December 10 to Wednesday, December 12, because of weather conditions.

 

            Steve Nolte called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. and stated that a copy of the Open Meetings Law was available for review.

 

A motion was made by Borcher and seconded by Gerdes to approve the minutes of the November 12, 2007, regular meeting.  Roll call vote:  Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-absent, Nolte-yes.  Carried 5-0.

 

A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Goracke to approve General Fund claims in the amount of $472,820.28.  Roll call vote:  Gerdes-yea, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-absent, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes.  Carried 5-0.

 

A discussion was held concerning the possibility of allowing Johnson-Brock students to participate in Agriculture classes and FFA.  Details of a possible agreement with Johnson-Brock were outlined by Supt. Moles and Christy Hodges.  Johnson-Brock would pay a portion of Mrs. Hodges salary in return for providing classes to Johnson-Brock students via Distance Learning.  Johnson-Brock students would then be allowed to join the Johnson County Central FFA program.

 

A motion was made by Gerdes and seconded by Borcher to approve an agreement to provide opportunities for FFA to students at Johnson-Brock.  Roll call vote:  Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-absent, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes.  Carried 5-0.

PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS

 

            Principal Skwarek reported on the following:

 

  1. The spelling progress report was reviewed.

 

  1. The Math Assessment mock review will take place in January.

 

  1. There are 58 potential pre-school students in the district.

 

Principal Lester reported on the following:

 

  1. The Safety and Crisis Response teams will be meeting soon.

 

  1. Work is being done to correct parking and driving concerns.

 

  1. High school staff members will be receiving CPR training.

 

  1. The Top 10 Banquet and Honors Night were discussed.

 

Principal Gottschalk reported on the following:

 

  1. Music programs were discussed.

 

  1. The middle school fundraiser was very successful.

 

  1. The middle school Homecoming will take place in the coming week.

 

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

 

            Superintendent Moles reported on the following:

 

  1. Students were recognized for their accomplishments. 

 

  1. Board of Education elections will take place in the coming year.  The term of office for Mike Gerdes, Teresa Goracke, and Barb Gottula expire after 2008.

 

  1. Results of a survey of girls in grades 8-11 concerning fall sports were reviewed.  The committee to consider adding softball will have at least one more meeting before the Board makes any decisions.

 

  1. A report on economic impact from the Department of Correctional Services was distributed.

 

  1. Sue Borcher will serve as the Board of Education’s Government Relations Network member in NASB.

 

  1. The Tecumseh and Nemaha Valley signs in the Tecumseh and Cook parks will be offered to the city boards.

 

  1. A project to raise funds for new bleachers in the high school gym was discussed.

 

  1. All elementary teachers will attend the State Reading Conference on February 22. 

 

  1. There will be no classes on Friday, January 18 to allow for a full day of teacher in-service.

 

FUTURE DATES      

 

            The NRCSA Legislative Forum will take place in Lincoln on Jan. 22.

 

            The NASB School Board Leadership Workshop will take place in Lincoln on Jan. 27.

 

            The NASB/NASA Labor Relations Workshop will take place in Kearney on Feb. 4 and 5.

 

            The NRCSA Spring Conference will take place in Kearney on March 12 and 13.

 

OLD BUSINESS

            A motion was made by Gerdes and seconded by Borcher to approve revisions of the following Board of Education policies:  4001 (Recruitment and Selection), 4002 (Equal Opportunity Employment), 4003 (Non-Discrimination), 4007 (Family and Medical Leave Act), 4007A (Family and Medical Leave Act Application), 4014 (Receiving Agents), 4015 (Unauthorized Purchases), 4016 (Use of School Facilities and Equipment by School Employees)5501 (Bus Transportation), 5503 (Use of School Buses), 5504 (Special Education Transportation), and 5505 (Safe Pupil Transportation Plan) and to delete policy 5506 (Safe Pupil Transportation Plan).  Roll call vote:  Hunzeker-absent, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes.  Carried 5-0.

 

            A motion was made by Goracke and seconded by Borcher to approve the 2006-07 Tecumseh and Nemaha Valley audits.  Roll call vote:  Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-absent.  Carried 5-0.

 

            A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Gerdes to approve the hiring of Denise Kelly as a classroom aide/interpreter.  Roll call vote:  Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-absent, Nolte-yes.  Carried 5-0.

 

            A letter from Steve Mercure, representing the Village of Cook, regarding water metering at the school in Cook, was discussed.  Supt. Moles will contact legal counsel to help with this issue.

           

             

 

            A recess was declared at 9:30 p.m.

 

            The meeting was reconvened at 9:40 p.m.

 

A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Gottula to enter executive session for the purposes of discussing the Superintendent’s contract, personnel, and legal issues.  Roll call vote:  Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-absent, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes.   Carried 5-0.

 

Entered executive session at 9:45 p.m.

 

            A motion was made by Gottula and seconded by Borcher to leave executive session.  Roll call vote:  Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-absent, Nolte-yes.  Carried 5-0.

 

            Left executive session at 11:00 p.m.

 

            A motion was made by Gerdes and seconded by Borcher to offer Jack Moles a two-year contract as Superintendent with the salary to be set at a later date.  Roll call vote:  Gerdes-yes Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-absent, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes.  Carried 5-0.

 

            The meeting was adjourned at 11:04 p.m., with the next regularly scheduled meeting to be held in the middle school library in Cook at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, January 14, 2007.
