BOARD OF EDUCATION
REGULAR MEETING
February 13, 2008
7:30 P.M.
Members Present: Susan Borcher, Mike Gerdes, Teresa Goracke, Barb Gottula, Greg Hunzeker, Steve Nolte

The Johnson County School District No. 0050 Board of Education met in regular session at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, in the media center in Cook. A current copy of the agenda was available for inspection in the office of the Superintendent prior to the meeting.
Steve Nolte called the meeting to order at 8:04 p.m. and stated that a copy of the Open Meetings Law was available for review.
A motion was made by Gottula and seconded by Gerdes to approve the minutes of the January 14, 2008, regular meeting and January 30, 2008 special meeting. Roll call vote: Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Goracke to approve General Fund claims in the amount of $472,971.92 and Building Fund claims in the amount of $8,000.00. Roll call vote: Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes. Carried 6-0.
The “Old Business” agenda item, Softball, was moved up in the meeting. A discussion was held on the possibilities of adding a softball program at Johnson County Central.
A motion was made by Borcher and seconded by Gerdes to pursue a cooperative sponsorship with Auburn High School for softball. Roll call vote: Goracke-no, Gottula-no, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-no, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes. Vote was 3-3. A majority of those present needed to vote yes to pass the motion, thus the motion failed.
A motion was made by Goracke and seconded by Borcher to start a softball program at Johnson County Central and pursue a cooperative sponsorship with area schools. Roll call vote: Gottula-no, Hunzeker-no, Nolte-no, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes. Motion did not carry 3-3. A majority of those present needed to vote yes to pass the motion, thus the motion failed.
A recess was declared at 9:30 p.m.
The meeting was reconvened at 9:45 p.m.

PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS
Principal Skwarek reported on the following:
- Attendance at Parent-Teacher Conferences was down slightly.
- The Johnson County Spelling Contest is being hosted by Johnson County Central on Saturday, Feb. 16.
Principal Gottschalk reported on the following:
- Elementary teachers will be attending the State Reading Conference on Friday, Feb. 22.
- The 6th Grade Science Fair will be held in Cook on March 6.
- The number of students on the middle school down list is being studied.
- Attendance at Parent-Teacher Conferences was down also. Reasons for lower attendance could possibly be attributed to having an afternoon as opposed to an evening as part of the conferences, and that some parents may be simply accessing grades on the Power School web site.
Principal Lester reported on the following:
- The Top 10 Banquet will be on Monday, March 3.
- The State Academic Decathlon will be held on Friday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 16.
- Pre-registration for classes will begin shortly.
SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Superintendent Moles reported on the following:
- Students were recognized for their accomplishments.
- Board of Education elections will take place in the coming year. The term of office for Mike Gerdes, Teresa Goracke, and Barb Gottula expire after 2008.
- State Aid figures have been released. Although the report from the Nebraska Department of Education shows an increase of about $287,000, Supt. Moles cautioned that he believes the printout does not provide an accurate comparison of figures from this year to next.
- The Educators Health Alliance will release the renewal rates for health insurance on Friday, Feb. 15.
- The administrators held an administrative retreat recently. An outline of discussions was provided.
- A report on use of the school’s web site showed that the site is receiving significant traffic.
FUTURE DATES
The NRCSA Spring Conference will take place in Kearney on March 12 and 13.

A motion was made by Gottula and seconded by Borcher to approve revisions of the following Board of Education policies: 2010 (Election of Administrative Personnel), 2400 (Line of Authority), 2410 (Administrative Actions in Emergencies), 2420 (Staff Handbooks), 2430 (Professional Growth), 2440 (Administrative Action in Absence of Policy), 3010 (Budget Planning), 3020 (Public Review of the Budget), 3030 (Transfer of Funds Between Categories), 3040 (Budget as Spending Plan), 4100 (Qualifications for Appointment as Teacher), 4101 (Qualifications for Appointment to Administrative and Supervisory Positions), and 4110 (Contract). Roll call vote: Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Gerdes and seconded by Hunzeker to continue membership in the Nebraska Association of School Boards for the 2008-09 school year. Roll call vote: Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Gerdes to enter executive session for the purpose of discussing the Superintendent’s salary. Roll call vote: Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes. Carried 6-0.
Entered executive session at 11:02 p.m.
A motion was made by Borcher and seconded by Hunzeker to leave executive session. Roll call vote: Gerdes-yes, Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes. Carried 6-0.
Left executive session at 11:42 p.m.
A motion was made by Nolte and seconded by Goracke to provide Supt. Moles with a 3.125% increase in salary for the 2008-09 school year. Roll call vote: Goracke-yes, Gottula-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Nolte-yes, Borcher-yes, Gerdes-yes. Carried 6-0.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:45 p.m., with the next regularly scheduled meeting to be held in the high school cafeteria in Tecumseh at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 10, 2008.
