On Friday March 14th, 8 students from Johnson County Central High School competed in the Northwest Missouri State University Chemistry Day. Jordan Schmidt, Nicole Searcey, Kim Homsey, Kaci Wolken, Katie Kuhl, Jamie Straube, Kelsi Holthus, and Jacob Buss made the trip for JCC High School. Each student took a test consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions. Only Kim Homsey participated in the advanced chemistry test, which covers some physics, all others took the general chemistry test. There were 64 total students from 10 teams taking the General Chemistry test, Nicole Searcey and Kaci Wolken tied for 6th place with 38 points, they were followed by Jordan Schmidt with 33 points, Katie Kuhl with 32, Jamie Straube with 30, Kelsi Hothus with 28, and Jacob Buss with 25. Though none of these students placed in the top five to earn individual honors, their combined scores brought home the championship plaque for their division.
After the test, as they waited for scores to be tabulated the college sponsors a âCandy Bar Triviaâ contest where students can shout out answers to various questions, mostly about science, then show their athleticism in catching candy thrown into the mob. Jacob Buss combined his trivia knowledge with a love of candy to be our top performer in this event.
