High School

FROM THE RANGE TO THE COURTS

JCC Students in 9th Grade PE and Advanced PE have concluded a Unit on Archery and now are participating in a Tennis Unit. Students took notes on safety rules, techniques, rules of the sport, and learned how to be an effective archer and tennis player. The students took a written test over the archery notes and will do the same following the current tennis unit. These classes have also played some volleyball during the first quarter of school. I would like to thank Ann Curry and Terry Kage and the City Employees for getting another tennis net put up for the city courts. We currently have 56 students in 3 classes taking advantage of this opportunity to play, and others have enjoyed this as well. Their cooperation is what made this unit a possibility.

Our K thru 5th grade students our enjoying PE Classes everyday of the week. They meet for 25 minutes each day for a total of 125 minutes per week. I appreciate the support of our administration for allowing this necessary time for kids to get exercise and have some fun. I also enjoy working with such a supportive elementary teaching staff. They help make sure the kids have proper shoes and are ready for class. These students complete a different 5 minute warm-up each day that includes; jogging, walking, jumping rope, stretching and wall stretch. We work to strengthen the upper body, lower body, and the core. We work on jumping and balance and flexibility. Following the warm-up the students enjoy a game or exercise activity. A highlight for grades K thru 2 are the Roller Racers and Hula Hoops. Grades 3 thru 5 have been playing a game called Newcome. It is a form of volleyball, using catching and throwing skills. There has to be teamwork and cooperation and movement to be successful.
