Average Scores for All Grades at JCC Meet or Exceed Standards on 2010 NeSA-R
by Marsha Bacon
The Nebraska State Accountability (NeSA-R) Reading Reports are now available to the district. Reports were mailed to the parents of participating students on August, 25. Students that participated in last year’s NeSA-R assessment were enrolled in the JCC school district during the 2009-2010 school year in the following grades: 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 11th. The NeSA-R is a new single, statewide testing system that is replacing STARS, the former local assessment system and is required by state law. The NeSA-Reading results this year provide a first-year baseline and are considered the “initial” results. The report that parents receive indicates how their student performed overall. In addition, information is provided on how he or she tested in comparison to students in our district and throughout the state. In the state of Nebraska, 147,337 public school students grades three through eighth and 11th were tested last March or April. Students with an 85 or higher score met or exceeded standards. Students scoring 84 or lower were considered below standards. Of the students tested, 68.6 percent of Nebraska students tested meet or exceed state reading standards. Overall, the Johnson County School District performed well on the NeSA-R. . Below is a chart comparing percentages of Johnson County School District students and students across the state that meet or exceed the state reading standards. More information about the statewide and school district results can be found on the Department of Education website: http://www.education.ne.gov The NeSA-R is one way to assess student performance. Other information parents can use to measure their student’s reading progress is participation in the classroom, classroom tests, homework assignments, and special projects. For more information parents can contact their student’s classroom teacher. Marsha Bacon, JCC District Assessment Coordinator
