JCC RECYCLING HELPS TO DEVELOP CITIZENS FOR TOMORROW
Did you know that JCC recycles all classroom paper and newspaper? First semester JCC schools RECYCLED over 2,500 pounds of paper! Classroom teachers have RECYCLE and REUSE paper boxes in their rooms.
FYI (Most recycle/reuse boxes are made from REUSED copy paper boxes.)
Recycle collection boxes are located in the offices, libraries
and main hallway of the high school. Students & teachers empty
their classroom boxes weekly into the larger Recycle collection boxes. FYI (New blue recycle bins were purchased this year with donated funds from the Tecumseh Foundation grant!)
All the classroom teachers have been very supportive in educating and participating in JCC’s recycling efforts. Our JCC students are very conscientious about recycling.
PAST: Ms. Fox and Mr. Doran initiated the collection of various recyclables many years ago in their shared classroom and several classroom teachers were already REUSING paper. This grassroots effort became school wide in 2010 with the focus of REUSING and RECYCLING PAPER and to support JCC’s Mission Statement; Citizens for tomorrow…
To help kick off the school wide recycling effort, the art department gave demonstrations to elementary students on how paper is recycled. In 2011 the 4th grade students collected and weighed all recycle paper from the Elementary building with the help of Nurse Kuhl. A graph charting the weight was kept up to date by Mr. Rother in the office. Community member, Mr. Arnold Horn, provided mid-day access to the Recycle site in Tecumseh for bi-monthly drop offs. Various students from the art department with Ms. Fox or Mr. Rother deposited recycled paper during lunch period. On more than one occasion paper collected from JCC filled an entire collection container!
PRESENT: In the middle school/ elementary school, Mr. Wellensiek and the student council members help with the collection and weighing of classroom paper and newspaper. Mr. Wellensiek uses the Cook recycling station to recycle newspaper.
In the High School and Tecumseh Elementary building Ms. North and the Life Skills Class help with the collection and weighing of recyclables.
Recyclables from this collection and classroom papers from Cook are taken to a Lincoln recycle site. Faculty members have donated their time and transportation to deposit recycled papers. Special thanks to Ms. Peters, Mr. Riensche, Ms. Durre, and Ms. Hodges for helping.
FUTURE: This April the art department will have recycled art project examples and handmade paper demonstrations for the elementary students to promote Earth Day and to celebrate their continuing contributions in recycling!
Our JCC students are well on their way to becoming positive citizens of today and of tomorrow.
