Happenings in the Band Department

By Fricke, Emily on November 10, 2014

The high school band worked very hard this marching season. Of course, there is always still work to be done and improvements to be made and we will continue to use the same skills we've been working into the concert season.

Currently the bands are working on music for our winter concerts. At the high school level, we always seems to have to squeeze in time to rehearse after marching but before our concert. But we have some great music lined up and one piece that is especially challenging. The middle school level and 6th graders have been working hard on their music and we've already started talking about contest time and small groups. The 5th graders have really been improving greatly over the past few weeks. We have had one full band rehearsal and are still getting used to the chaos and working together as a group. Watkins sales will be starting next week and will go through the Thanksgiving break! Please see any 7th-10th grader to order! Each student's profit will go towards their band trip in 2017!

Since the beginning of the school year, I have emphasizing with all of my groups the importance of pride in band and in any activity they may be participating in. I have seen a change in quite a few of the students for the better in taking pride in what they are doing (especially in band) because they are always working towards something, even if it just getting better before their next rehearsal. Pride used to be a huge part of band when I was in school and I'd really like to see that be a part of our bands again. One of the sources I have using to help foster this is through this video. Please give it a watch.

A quick reminder to all the 5th and 6th grade band parents. Practice minutes are part of your student's grade. Please make sure they are bringing their instruments home and practicing. 5th grades need to practice 140 minutes a week, 6th grade needs to practice 70 minutes a week. Also, we are working on changing the format of our 5th grade band grades.

-  There will be two semester grades instead of 4 quarters.

  • Participation/Effort/Attitude is worth 50% of their grade
  • Practice minutes are worth 20%
  • Performances are worth 30%

Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions about your student's grade. (402)335-7362
