HS Social Studies

February 15, 2016

Hello from the JCC HS social studies department:

Thus far this semester we have been off to a running start in all courses. Geography is currently focusing on Central America and the Caribbean. We have taken the majority of the month of January to go through this topic. Most of our time was spent doing presentations on each of the Caribbean Islands and I was very pleased with the outcome – I also believe the students had fun with the project.

World History has been going well this semester, also. We recently did an activity where students created a presentation in which they had to explain what country they would colonize first if given the chance to be the President of the United States. We were able to connect this to our current topic – the Age of Expansion. Our next subject will be the Age of Absolutism and the Industrial Revolution.

In Modern US History, we are getting to the end stages of the Civil War. This topic has taken much of the first month of the semester. Our next topic will be World War I, which the students seem to be excited about. We then plan on finishing the semester with either World War II or the Vietnam War – depending on what the class wishes to look at.
