Mrs. Benson's First Grade News 2018

April 03, 2018

It is hard to believe that our school year is already to the month of April. We sure had a lot of lion weather days in March. First graders know that April showers bring May flowers, but they would prefer it showered or rained at night!! The kids really enjoy taking a break and going outside to play on the playground or walk on the track.

We haven’t let the weather stop us from learning. Although, we have had some help from a special person this year. Mrs. Tashia Krecklow is student teaching in our classroom. With her help, we have been practicing how to count with dimes, nickels, and pennies. We have also worked on congruent shapes, line of symmetry, understanding fractions, and math facts.

In writers workshop, our class has been working on nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The hard part is putting it all together to create a detailed story showing the correct sequence. Our class wrote friendly letters to a parent and walked to the post office to mail them. Written communication is so important in our daily lives. What a great way to practice this skill and also have some fun.

The kids have noticed that our reading stories are getting longer. Thursday night homework is a challenge, but we’re trying to get ready for second grade. We will keep practicing our vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills each day, so we make sure our skills continue to get better. We also will work on reading independently by practicing our A.R. books each day and taking a quiz to test the main idea and details of the story.

Events that are in our future and are always fun to look forward too are the elementary track and field day, our spring music concert, the first grade field trip, and of course, the last day of school.

We will continue to work hard and enjoy each other. Have a wonderful spring! Watch the weather and stay healthy and safe. The first graders will continue to practice being responsible, being respectful, being safe, and being a learner the Thunderbird Way.

Take Care,

From Mrs. Benson's First Grade
