First Grade - Mrs. Faris

April 23, 2018

Happy May Day! The first graders are preparing May Baskets that they will secretly deliver to their first grade friends in Mrs. Benson’s room. They will be filled with popcorn and candy treats. We love to celebrate special days in first grade.

Our academics keep us extremely busy during the school year. Mrs. Benson and Mrs. Faris developed some First Grade academic goals that keep us focused on our learning. These are:

  • I can read fluently, and understand what I read.
  • I can solve math problems in my everyday life.
  • I can write complete sentences to share information (using my spelling, English, and vocabulary skills).
  • I can write neatly so others can read it.
  • I can learn about the world around me through social science lessons.

All of our lessons in reading, phonics, spelling, math, English, and social sciences can be linked to these learning goals. It helps each of us understand why every lesson is important.

We are now becoming “green thumbs.” We have planted bean seeds in soil and they are growing very well in our window. Mrs. Hodges and her students brought us a tower garden and we are growing other vegetables with only water and nutrients. We are finding it interesting that we can grow plants in different ways.

The school year is winding down, but we have a few activities coming up that are very exciting. On May 11th we have our annual track and field day. It begins at 1:00 p.m. Parents, grandparents, and other family members are welcome to attend. Each student will pick 4 events to compete in. Please put sunscreen on your child and send a water bottle that we can take along to the track.

On May 15th at 7:00 p.m. is our spring concert in the high school gym. The students have been practicing their songs and are excited to share them with you.

We are learning about zoo animals from North America, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Oceans. We are learning about the continents, the habitats, diets, and other characteristics of each individual animal. This leads up to our final event for the school year. On Thursday, May 17th, we will be traveling to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha for our annual field trip. It is a wonderful of connecting what we have learned to what we see in real life. It is a special day of friendship and fun. But we are all exhausted after walking through the zoo!

The last day of classes is Friday, May 18th, with a 1:00 p.m. dismissal. It has been an amazing year of learning and growing. I thank all of the parents of the students in my classroom. It has been an exciting year!

Thanks for reading! Have a fantastic summer!
