First Grade News in April!

By Benson, Karla on April 15, 2015

Spring time is here!  We are feeling our energy come back.  Our class enjoys being outside and breathing the springtime air.  We are also learning that responsibility in being a learner is completing our daily lessons and homework.  This helps us earn the privilege to take fresh air breaks.  Learning work ethic is a very important life skill to develop.  It is important to learn how to read, write for meaning, remember math facts and concepts, and solve problems.

We have been working on a lot of vocabulary development to help us learn.  We are studying what characters, setting, plot, predictions, drawing conclusions, inferences, main ideas, and details are.  All these ideas help us to improve in reading and also help understand what we read.

New vocabulary words for math is estimate, inches, centimeters, fractions, cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones, math facts, line segments, tally marks, and comparisons with equal to, greater than, or lesser than.

The new vocabulary in Language Arts that we are learning about is declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, and imperative sentences.  We have been working on compound words, contractions, an apostrophe, subject, predicate, punctuation, antonyms, synonyms, nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

In Social Science, the new words studied would be evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection to help us learn about the water cycle.  Roots, stems, veins, petals, and seeds for the parts of a flower.  The word oviparous helped us to study about animals that are hatched from eggs.

All the new vocabulary opens the world up for more learning as we continue learning and growing.

We are also anticipating enjoying our field day, spring music concert, and our field trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo, and, of course, summertime fun.

Take Care,  Mrs. Benson
