From Mrs. Crotty's Class

April 18, 2018

We are well into testing season, and the year is very quickly coming to an end. We have taken all of our state tests, but coming right up will be our MAP tests. Plus another field trip is just around the corner.

Our state testing schedule was very relaxed this year. We had 3 tests to take, ELA, SCI, and MATH.  We took one test each week for three weeks. Our focus was very strong and we know that these tests are very important. We are preparing to move into 6th grade, and these tests play an important part in our placement next year.

MAP testing will start shortly after we finish up with state testing. These tests are an excellent tool to show how much growth we have made over our 5th grade year. We have a lot more knowledge now than we had back in the Fall. Both the state tests and the MAP tests are a chance to show just how smart we are. Don’t forget, during MAP tests, we need to eat a well- balanced and nutritious breakfast plus get a good night’s sleep before test days.

April 17th is another field trip for the 5th grade. This will be our 3rd and final outing for the year. We have been very fortunate to have gotten three field trips. This last trip will be for science. We will be taking the fish from science class and releasing them. We do this at Schramm Park. This day will also be filled with hiking and fishing. Yes, we will be touching worms and fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As we bring our 5th grade year to a close, we are understanding how math, reading, language, and more are a continual progression. We came into 5th grade needing to know and remember the materials we had learned in previous years.

From there, we kept building on those skills and learned new skills. We have made amazing accomplishments!

Watch for us next year in 6th grade and see how we grow!

Update: Our “Fish Release” field trip was a huge success! It was cold to start the day, and we started out fishing. Then we moved on to learn about invertebrates and pond water. Since it was so cold, we were allowed to eat lunch on the bus where it was warm. After lunch, the sun come out just in time for our hike. Boy did that warm us up. We finished up our day by naming and releasing our fish, feeding and watching some other bigger trout and carp. We also played a game about the food chain. After the sun came out and it warmed up, it was much more enjoyable. It is always good to spend a day outside in the fresh air. We had a great time. Thanks again to all the adults that went with us and helped to make this a great day!
