Mrs. Benson's First Grade News

April 04, 2016

It is already 4th quarter and our class is picking up the pace with reading, math facts, and writing our stories.

In reading, we have been working on what kinds of stories are narrative or expository stories. We have been working and figuring out the main idea or theme of each of our stories. We also have been learning that details are so important in a story. The details help us to understand the sequence and visualize the story in our minds better. It is fun to make a connection with the stories we read with things that happen in our own homes or families.

Our math vocabulary is really improving. We understand fractions, inches, centimeters, how to tell time to the nearest half hour, cubes, spheres, cylinders, and congruent shapes. We need to practice our math facts, so we can be fluent with our answers. These are hard, but will keep practicing them so we are ready for second grade.

Our stories that we are writing have been about real places, facts, details, and opinions. We are working on using adjectives to describe more things, and writing detailed sentences. We are trying to get away from short non describing sentences. These are short and sweet, but telling more information helps others understand what we are writing about. We now know that writing is a big part of our world and the more we do it, the better we will be.

Things to look forward too will be learning about the water cycle, earth day, an elementary field day on May 13th, a field trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo on May 18th, and the last day of first grade, May 19th.

Enjoy the wonderful spring days and watch the school calendar for upcoming events.

Thanks, Mrs. Benson
