Region V Systems Accounces 2016 Youth Action Board Selections

September 23, 2016

Lincoln, Nebraska – Region V Systems has announced 24 youth from counties in southeast Nebraska have been selected to serve on the 2016 Youth Action Board (YAB).

The Youth Action Board (YAB) is comprised of high school leaders representing the 16 counties Region V Systems serves (Polk, Butler, Saunders, York, Seward, Lancaster, Otoe, Fillmore, Saline, Thayer, Jefferson, Gage, Johnson, Nemaha, Pawnee and Richardson). Region V Systems, Regional Prevention Coordination received 39 highly qualified applications for YAB. All applicants went through an interview process for the opportunity to serve on the board.

We are proud to announce that three Johnson County Central High School students were selected to this board. Sara Kettelhake, a senior, Hannah Swanda and Sierra McClintock both juniors show strong leadership in the Johnson County Coalition (CAN). These leadership skills helped them to strongly qualify for YAB.

The purpose of YAB is to enhance youth leadership regionally and locally within member’s home communities. YAB is entirely youth driven. Members plan and carry out two annual events for regional youth: Red/White Tailgate which, is a tailgate at the University of Nebraska spring game held at Cook Pavilion attended by 600 youth from across the region and June Jam, which, is a two and half day educational conference attended by 250 youth. These activities are youth planned and youth led.

Members of the YAB are initially selected based on their demonstrated leadership in their local communities and schools. Serving on YAB provides opportunities to enhance their leadership skills while having an impact of topics locally, regionally, and most recently, at a national level. “Members of YAB are valuable assets to the ongoing mission of Region V Systems.” Stated CJ Johnson, Region V Systems Regional Administrator.

The purpose of Region V Systems Regional Prevention Coordination (RPC) is to prevent the abuse of alcohol and other drugs, for all ages, through forming and supporting local/county community coalitions which sustain a statewide prevention system.

Johnson County Coalition is made up of members of the community and mostly Johnson County Central High School (3-D) and Sterling High School (LEAD) students. The coalition meets once a month alternating between sites. All community members are welcome to participate in these meetings.
