¡Hola!

May 14, 2018

¡Hola!

We are finishing a wonderful year in Spanish. The students have worked hard and have surprised me and I think themselves with how much Spanish they can recognize and use.

In Spanish I, we just finished a novel. It has been fun to see the kids engaged in the story and often not realizing that it is Spanish. This week they are making videos, topics of their choice, to sum up what they have acquired this year. I love seeing kids’ creative sides and am thinking that some videos from this year’s classes will give my prior favorites a run for their money!

In Spanish II, we recently started our novel. It is the same story as Spanish I’s, but in a different tense. I have asked some students how they feel about the book, and again, they have surprised themselves with how much and easily they are understanding what they’re reading.

Spanish III had the opportunity last month to tour El Museo Latino in Omaha. We enjoyed seeing the exhibits as well as walking 24th Street seeing the murals. We took this day as a mini-immersion opportunity. The kids were quite nervous to spend all day in Spanish, but they did a fabulous job. Today we finished reading a novel. They were very intrigued by the mystery.

In Spanish Composition, we began the year with various types of essays. We have spent this quarter relearning and practicing accent placement as well as several projects surrounding them as people: what type of person are they, what is home like, what is family like, etc. This has prepared us for reading La casa en Mango Street. The format of the book is something new to them. So far, they have enjoyed the vignettes compiled. This last week they are presenting and sharing activities about a Spanish speaking country.

It has been wonderful to work with the students here. I wish them the best as they continue their journeys!
